TENEMENT WINDOWS
Tenement Museum, New York.
Public art commission.
Collaboration with Suchitra Van.
Through collaboration with Shared JourneysESOL students at CAMBA*, this multi-perspective installation addressed the complex transitions in the daily lives of immigrants, reflecting on transitions between languages, aspects of culture, expectations and reality.
The etched panels include words, maps, and diagrams derived from ESOL student narratives. They are complemented by Suchitra Van’s photography which seeks to capture aspects of immigrants' lives in the city that are not publicly visible.
Students in the Windows Project came from countries around the world, including Panama, Mexica, Bangladesh, Yemen, Haiti, Congo, Central Republic of Africa and Ecuador.
*CAMBA is a non profit organization with programs throughout the diverse neighborhoods of Brooklyn.
